Free Radicals and
Anti-Aging

If you were able to view your body's cellular activity through a powerful microscope, you would meet up with one of its most powerful enemies.  Known as free radicals, these electrically-charged molecules actually attack the healthy cells in your body.  They tear through the cell membrane, compromising its function and structure, and ultimately destroying it.  One free radical can lead to others in a destructive chain reaction called oxidation, which leads to skin damage and aging.  It manifests as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven and dull skin tone and loss of firmness and elasticity.  Oxidation is also implicated in the development of numerous diseases, including heart disease and cancer.

What Causes Free Radicals?

Free radicals are triggered both internally and externally.

Internal Triggers

  • Our bodies' own normal energy production processes
  • Normal metabolism of fat, carbohydrates and proteins
  • Digesting fatty foods, processed foods, alcohol and caffeine
  • Chemicals and endocrines produced by stress
  • Low blood supply caused by heart attacks or strokes

External Triggers

  • Smoking
  • Pollution
  • UV exposure
  • Fatigue
  • Toxic chemicals

Antioxidants: The Free Radical Antidote

The term "antioxidant" literally means "against oxidation."  These are the crusaders against the free radicals and the oxidation processes that damage our skin and our health.  Some antioxidants are produced naturally by our bodies.  Also, we now know that many substances, including vitamins, minerals and certain foods and topical ingredients contain powerful antioxidants which can supplement what our bodies produce.  This is important to know because as we age, our antioxidant levels decrease, so supplementation is essential.

Naturally Occurring Antioxidants

  • Superoxide Dimutase (a cellular enzyme that degrades free radicals.)
  • Glutathione (an amino acid which detoxifies and defends against damage from smoking and radiation.)

External Antioxidants

  • Vitamins A, C and E
  • Certain minerals, including selenium and zinc
  • Green tea
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Grape seed extract
  • Turmeric

Fighting Free Radicals

The best free radical-fighting strategy is a multi-level, antioxidant approach:

  • Stick to a healthy diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Ask your doctor about antioxidant dietary supplements
  • Choose skin care products which contain topical antioxidant ingredients to boost your skin's defenses against sun damage and pollution.
